Hygee isn’t just for winter, it can be experienced year round! Embrace hygge this spring with these simple tips!
Hygge invokes thoughts of cold winter days, hot cocoa, blankets, and all the things that make life cozy. Hygge is about feeling comfort and joy in the small moments. Isn’t that something that you want to experience all year long?
Hygee is for spring and all the other seasons! Bringing hygge to your home is simple and fun.
Creating an environment that draws you in and makes you feel completely at home in your own space, and that makes visitors want to sit a rest awhile is the essence of hygge.
Coziness is not just about fires in the wood burning stove, hot cocoa (those it is awesome year round), and fluffy blankets. Your home can be cozy without those things. Spring speaks of light and new life. Think open windows, fresh cut flowers, and invigorating scents.
This simple tips will help you embrace hygge this spring!
10 Ways to Embrace Hygge This Spring
1. Bring Nature Inside
Nothing brings life to a home like literally having nature around you. Fresh cut flowers from the garden or the store make it easy. Trader Joe’s has beautiful, simplistic bouquets for the price of a cup of coffee. I treat myself to flowers from there about once a month.
You can also have indoor plants around the house. They add beauty, the reminder of new life, and many acts as natural air purifiers!
2. Keep those Candles Burning
Candles will always be hygge. Just because winter has left, it doesn’t mean that you have to put your candles away. Candles speak of coziness and make a home seem inviting. Beeswax candles are perfect for all seasons. The light honey scent that they have is soothing and not overpowering.
3. Diffuse Essential Oils
Essential oils are the perfect way to make your home feel “homie”. Forget the plugins that are toxic and can’t start fires, instead fill your own with God created scents. Think of fresh scents like lemon, lavender, and grapefruit. An added bonus, lemon, and lavender may help with seasonal allergies.
3. Switch to Lighter Linens
April is usually the month that I put my down comforters and flannel sheets away. I pull out my cotton sheets out of my linen chest. They have a crisp lightness that is perfect for the warm weather to come. If you had warm cozy blankets sitting about, swap them out for lightweight throws.
4. Open up the Windows
In the winter you want to stay snug indoors. In the spring, it is time to bring a lightness to your soul. Throw open the window and allow the gentle spring breeze to blow in. Fresh air brightens your day and mood. Stuffiness from the winter is blown out.
6. Bake Pretty Things
While we naturally think of baked goods in the winter, spring is still a good time to bake. Bring floral and citrus flavors to your table. Things like dandelion muffins, rose or lavender shortbread, and lemon scone topped with lemon whipped cream will bring a pop of freshness and spring to your tongue.
7. Bring on the Tea
I love coffee, don’t get me wrong, but tea will always be my first love. Fancy treats like a chamomile latte or a simple cup of soothing lemon tea teaming with spring flavors!
If you are in search of more spring-inspired flavors my eCookbook, Steeped: Simple Nourishing Teas and Treats has lots of easy to prepare tea blends and treats, hence the name. 😉
8. Start Seeds Inside
Depending on where you live it is still too cold to start seeds inside, even if it’s not, many seeds to better started in trays than in the soil. It’s fun to watch the seeds poke through the soil and start to mature. It’s a reminder that spring is a fresh start, new life is all around us!
9. Declutter
There is a reason “spring cleaning” is in the spring. Clearing out what you don’t use will make your house feel less stressful, once it’s done you will feel more at peace too. You don’t have to go complete Maria Kondo but spring is a good time to reevaluate what things in your house that you truly use and enjoy and those things that you are keeping because you feel like you need to. Get rid of visual clutter.
My personal favourite way to go about decluttering is William Morris’s saying,
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
It is a gradual process that takes time, that’s okay. I still have some boxes to sort through and things that I have “saved” because I will use them someday. 10 years later, someday has still not happened for me.
If that’s you as well, allow yourself the freedom to let go of some of those things. Then give yourself grace as you find time to do so. None of us are perfect.
10. Get Outside
Pack a picnic and head to the park. Linger in under the warm sun and embrace the new season. Even a simple leisurely walk or some time with those you cherish in the front yard will fit the bill. Kick off your shoes and let your toe sink into the grass.
Embrace the small and simple things in life. There is beauty in simplicity and in making a space for those who enter through your door.

🙂 I’ve been thinking about it. I did write one for another blog but it’s been a few years.

Love this! Do you just use sheets and throws on your bed in Spring? I was just in the process of figuring out something to replace our down duvet for the season.

I am SO sorry that I missed this Natalia! I use sheets and a lightweight quilt year round. I add a down comforter and switch to flannel sheets for the warmer months.

I just read your lovely post as the wind is roaring outside and the temperature is 37 degrees! So winter is hanging on with a vengeance–although last week it was hot! It hasn’t quite made up its mind yet. But the lovely weather will be here soon. Blessings! Hope you are enjoying some lilacs.

Our weather took a dip back into the 30s a couple days ago one morning. I have enjoyed some lilacs. My dad cut a bunch off for me. The ones you gifted to me twice still bring me so much joy when I remember them. I actually have a few of the flowers dried and taped into my journal. 🙂
