Think candles are hard and time consuming to make? You can make simple soy wax candles in less than 30 minutes!

A flickering candle is one of the essentials of creating a cozy home as crisp weather sets in. Candles, especially fall scented ones are pure hygge.

Do images of pioneers standing over boiling pots of wax, slowly dipping strings up and down float through your head when you think about making your own candles? Oh to be Ma Ingalls.

Candle making feels like it should be hard. I’ll let you in on a secret, it’s not nearly as hard as you think.

I love beeswax candles. They are my first love when it comes to candles but they are a bit more temperamental and do cost more to make. So to balance it out a bit I tend to make soy wax candles too. They are a little easier to make and help stretch your budget. This recipe calls for just a small amount of beeswax for longer burn time.

Not too long ago, I discovered Simply Earth, they take the guesswork out of making natural products and home essentials from scratch. They are a subscription box service that sends you a box each month of essential oils, recipes, and most of the ingredients to make the recipes at home.

October’s box focuses on, you guessed it candle making. It also comes with recipes for a defuser blend, a lip balm, and few others.

If you are new to Simply Earth you also get a Big Bonus Box with things like coconut oil, beeswax, and essential oil roller bottles to make the other recipes. Each recipe card has a star next to the ingredients not provided. This month, for example, would be that the containers for the candles are not included. You can use a small mason jar, a jar from an old candle, or a cute tin!

The Key Players

  • Soy Wax
  • Beeswax
  • Coconut Oil
  • Essential Oils
  • Wick
  • Tin/Glass Jar

Trouble Shooting:

Frosting– This is when flakes appear on the tops and sides of the candles. The coconut oil helps to prevent that. You can also pour the candles at a lower temperature if you are measuring it. For this recipe, we are simply letting the wax rest for about a minute once the wax has melted to pour.

Depression– If you get a small dip around the wick simply melt additional wax and pour a small amount over the candle.

How to Make Simple Soy Wax Candles for Fall

1. Melt the soy wax, beeswax, and coconut oil in a double boiler or melting pot. If you are going to be making candles a lot, it is a good idea to designate a pot for the purpose of melting wax. Once the mixture has just melted, remove from heat, add the essential oils, and stir for 30 seconds.

2. Dip the bottom of the wick into the melted wax to adhere it to the bottom of the container. You can also put a drop of hot glue in the middle of the container to hold the wick more firmly.

3. Prop the wick upright, and pour the wax into the container. You can use a pencil, or better yet thread the wick through the spring of a cloths pin to ensure it stays up straight.

4. Allow the candles to cool completely. Trim to the wick to 1/4 inch in height. Wait for at least 24 hours to light the candle. Burn candles within sight and away from flammable objects, children, and pets.

More Natural DIY

  • Lip Balm
  • Herbal Bath Soak
  • Healing Garden Salve
  • Oatmeal Face Scrub

To give these candles a “fall” scent I used a blend of cassia, orange, and clove essential oils. You can use your favourite essential oils of choice or simply leave them out for unscented candles.

This recipe is based on one of the recipes in October’s box.
