Soap making doesn’t get any easier when you take a shortcut and use a soap base to create your own simple sugar scrub soap bars! It will leave your skin feeling clean and refreshed!
Soap making, it was right up there with candle making on my “learn to make from scratch” list.
As a gal that grew up reading Little House in the Big Woods, where Ma made her soap as well as everything else, how could I not learn how?
It’s like a right of passage in the DIY world. I’ve made my share of soap over the years. My favourite recipe is still Mommy Potomus’s recipe for coconut oil soap.
Yet, even though it’s not that time consuming it takes just enough effort that I haven’t made my own soap from scratch in a long time.
Want an easy project that is fun to do with your kids and that takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish? Let me introduce you to the world of glycerin soap base. I believe that a made from scratch life is made possible with a measure of grace. Sometimes that grace comes about when you allow yourself to take “shortcuts”.
Glycerin soap base takes the guesswork out of soap making and lets you simply have fun. Plus there’s no waiting for 2+ weeks for the soap to cure. Instead, you can have a bar of soap that is ready to use as soon as it hardens!
Not too long ago, I discovered Simply Earth, they take the guesswork out of making your natural products from scratch. They are a subscription box service where they send you a box each month of essential oils, recipes, and most of the ingredients to make your products from scratch. My favourite recipe from this box? Their easy to make soap!
September’s box focuses on soapmaking. It has four essential oils, soap base, a soap mold, and recipe cards. Plus it comes with a bonus box with extra things like roller bottles, almond oil, and the other fun things for new customers. Each recipe card has a star next to the ingredients not provided. This month it was basics like sugar, lemon zest, and dried flowers.
The box comes with six other from-scratch recipes that are easy to whip up!
If you are just jumping into essential oils and natural DIY this is a great way to start and give yourself a boost of confidence as you figure it out. Even if you are an old hat at this, it’s a treat to have it all ready for you. Plus the boxes are cute. 🙂
These simple sugar scrub soap bars are the perfect thing to whip up when you want to pamper yourself a bit. They soothe your tired body and help exfoliate your skin, removing dead skin cells. They also make great gifts!
How to Make Simple Sugar Scrub Soap Bars
The Key Players
Soap Base
Cleanses skin, removing oil and dirt build-up. Pretty self-explanatory, it’s soap after all just melted down. The addition of aloe soothes irritated skin.
White Sugar
Sugar contains glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy that can boost new skin cell growth! The coarseness also helps to gently smooth the skin, polishing away dead skin cells. That’s just what you need when you’ve been gardening throughout the summer or when your skin dries out in the winter.
Dried Flowers
Dried flowers aren’t necessary to this soap, but they do make it smell good and look pretty. Lavender is a soothing herb that can make for a relaxing bath or shower. You could also try rose petal or calendula.
Essential Oils
The specific blend in this recipe is called “Happy Joy”, it is a blend of geranium, sweet orange, grapefruit, and Ylang Ylang essential oils. This blend helps ease stress and promotes feelings of joy and happiness.
You can also use whatever oil blend or single oil that you prefer. Feel free to make it your own!
This recipe is modified from two recipes in this month’s box from Simply Earth.
