I’m excited to share this salve with you! This blend of herbs works to heal and soothe your skin. It is an antiseptic and helps fight bacteria. It also works as an astringent to draw out infections and poisonous bites. It is perfect to use for cuts, scraps and bug bites. My little girls love using it and are a testimony to it’s healing work.
1 Part Plantain Leaf (Soothing, drawing, good for burns)
1 Part Yarrow Flower (Congeals blood, soothes the skin)
1 Part Echinacea Purpurea Leaf (Relieves bug bites, itches, staph infections,
1 Part Echinacea Purpurea Root (cuts, scraps)
1 Part Lavender Flower (Repels insects, antiseptic, topically healing)
1 Part Mullen Leaf (kills bacteria)
I used 1/4 cup of each herb. For every cup of herb, I used a cup of oil. For this salve, I used 1/2 olive oil and 1/2 coconut oil. Olive Oil is rich in Vitamin E and has anti-inflammatory properties. Coconut oil has antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Add all your ingredients to a crock pot and turn it on to the lowest setting. Leave for two to three days. (Note: Because my crockpot tends to get rather hot, I periodically check on it and turn it off at night.) After three days you will have an herb-infused oil. Strain off all the herbs. You can do this by using a stainless steel strainer or a cheesecloth. I use both. The cheesecloth allows you to squeeze out as much of the herb oil as possible. Pour your herb infused oil back into the crockpot and turn it medium heat. Slowly stir in about 4 TBS of beeswax pastilles. Once the beeswax pastilles are fully incorporated pour into a container of your choice.

Are you using fresh aloe or dried?
If using fresh, how do you keep mold out of the salve?
Thanks in advance.
Katie Mae Stanley
I used fresh but actually I have been leaving it out in my last few batches and forgot to update the recipe. Thank you so much for asking!

Katie, the person you replied to mentioned mold – is mold really an issue when using fresh aloe in a salve like this? I’ve never made anything like this before, so I’m not sure what to expect.
Katie Mae Stanley
Hi John, I am going to go edit my recipe. I have not used aloe in this salve for a while now but forgot to edit it. If I was to use fresh aloe now I would squeeze out the gel from the leaves and mix it in at the end instead of cooking it. Thank you for asking!
To answer your specific question, cooking the aloe would not make mold a concern but I don’t think that that is the best way to use aloe anymore. If you decide to add the gel from fresh aloe leaves the salve would have a shorter shelf life and *could* potentially cause the salve to grow mold.

This sounds like a really healing recipe. I’d like to try it as soon as the snow melts and I can gather what I need. Thanks for sharing with us at the Herbal Medicine Chest hop.

Hi, I’ve been reading your blog for a bit and I really love what you do. I actually would like to plug your blog, but I wanted to ask you if I could write about you before I did. I looked for a way to email you, but couldn’t find any other way than this. So, would it be alright if I wrote about you in a post and shared a link to your blog?
