I grew up thinking that coffee was disgusting. Mom and Dad didn’t drink it so obviously to wasn’t good. There was one thing I did make an exception for, See’s coffee candies that we gave my Grandma Burnett every year when we visited. Besides that I stayed away from the stuff, till I started trying “fancy” coffee drinks from Starbucks in high school. I loved the taste, but I always felt sick and jittery after drinking even 1/2 of one. I quickly came to realize that it was the combination of high amounts of caffeine, processed sugars and milks. After that I stopped drinking coffee until I was in my mid-twenties.
While visiting a friend I learned the joys drinking coffee made “the right way”, organic coffee with just a bit of cream and natural sweetener. I’ve been a coffee fan ever since. I like it in mochas, frappucinnos, ice cream or just a simple cup of freshly brewed hot coffee.
For awhile I was buying organic coffee from Starbucks but I didn’t really care for the bitter taste. After looking around a bit I discovered Cane Creek Coffee, an organic fair trade company that buys their coffee from small farms in Honduras. So far I have been very happy with the coffee I have bought from them.
I do have a new found love for coffee but it doesn’t mean that I drink it black. I’m not to that point yet. I enjoy drinking my coffee with a bit of raw cream, maple syrup and vanilla extract. To make things a bit easier I started mixing ingredients together in a small glass bottle. Whenever I want a cup of cup of coffee I pull it out of the fridge and add it to my cup. Now that the Lent Season is over I have been enjoying a cup or two every day or so.
I hope you enjoy this simple recipe as much as I do!
Simple Homemade Vanilla Creamer
1 pint cream (preferably raw pastured)
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 TBS vanilla extract
Shake together in a glass bottle or jar. Store in the fridge. The creamer stays fresh for about two weeks when using fresh raw cream.
