Homemade Lip Balm
Do you suffer from dry, cracked lips? I rarely find myself with out a tube of chapstick on hand. What I love about this lip balm is how moisturizing and simple it is to make. It only takes four ingredients, cocoa butter, coconut oil, bee’s wax and extract/essential oil. It feels amazing and leaves your lips feeling soft. The cocoa butter is moisturizing, creating a barrier between sensitive skin and the environment. Coconut oil is antibacterial and moisturizing, providing healing to your chapped lips. The bee’s wax acts as a hardening agent. When you add the vanilla extract it smells just like vanilla frosting. This chapstick also makes for an excellent lotion bar to use on the go; rub on dry hands and chapped faces in the winter time!
Homemade Lip Balm
4 TBS cocoa butter
4 TBS coconut oil
4 TBS bee’s wax pallets*
2 tsp vanilla extract
24 chapstick tubes or 10 1/2 oz tins
1. Melt the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a crock pot or in a sauce pot on low. Add in your bee’s wax and stir slowly to mix it all together.
2. Add your choice of extract or essential oil and stir in.
3. Place all the tubes or containers on a piece of parchment paper. Use your dropper to fill the chapstick tubes. Let cool and top with more oil mixture because the top will be slightly concave. If any oil spills or drops on the paper, simply scrap off when hardened and remelt.
For extracts I use 2 tsp. Essential oil; 10 to 20 drops depending on how strong I wish it to smell.
Peppermint Extract/ oil- Fot a delicious chocolate-mint scent
Cinnamon Essential Oil- A delightful twist reminiscent of Mexican hot chococlate
Sweet Orange Essential Oil- Simply yummy!
Plain- Leave out the extract for a simple chocolate/coconut sent
If you don’t want a chocolate sent you can replace the cocoa butter with more coconut oil.
*Depending on the season you may want to adjust the amount of bee’s wax. I made this the winter time; if I was to make it in the summer I would consider adding an additional two tablespoons of bee’s wax. The melting point of coconut oil is 76 degrees F and cocoa butter softens when it comes in contact with your body.
