Simple 3 Ingredient All-Purpose Cleaner

Clean, fresh smelling homes. Sparkling countertops. No harsh chemicals.

It sounds nice, doesn’t it? You want to clean your home with non-toxic cleaners, unfortunately, most of the ones you find are expensive.

You have thought of making your own household cleaning products, but you are intimidated.

“What if you waste ingredients, or what if they don’t turn out?”

Push those fears aside. You can conquer those fears with three, that’s right three simple ingredients, water, distilled white vinegar, and an essential oil.

It is as simple as that.

Water is practically free, woohoo! Purified, filtered water is best.

Distilled white vinegar disinfects and deodorizes, killing 99 percent of bacteria, 80 percent of viruses (germs) and 82 percent of mold. (Source) You will be paying no more than a few dollars for a gallon of white vinegar at your local grocery store.

Essential oils are used in tiny proportions so even a small bottle goes a long way. They add an antibacterial and disinfectant cleaning power.

Essential Oils for Cleaning:

  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • Lavender
  • Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca)
  • Eucalyptus

Glass bottles are best when making your own cleaners. Essential oils and vinegar will break down plastic bottles over time.

This simple 3 ingredient all-purpose cleaner is perfect for cleaning kitchen and bathroom counter tops, the outside of toilets, mirrors, and so much more! It frees up space in your cabinet, which is a win! Now your cabinets won’t be overflowing with bottles! To simplify even more, you can store the cleaner, along with a few other cleaning essentials in a caddy, so you can carry your supplies from room to room! Beauty is simplifying.

Simple 3 Ingredient All Purpose Cleaner

  • 1 glass spray bottle
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 15 drops essential oil(s)

Pour the water and vinegar into the glass spray bottle. Add the essential oil(s) of your choice. Screw in the sprayer and give it a good shake to combine.

Shake before use.

4 Simple Ways to Get Motivated When You Don’t Feel Like Cleaning

4 Simple Ways to Get Motivated When You Don't Feel Like Cleaning-www.nourishingsimplicity.org

I  wish I could say that I love to clean…

I am not a fan of cleaning by nature, yet I really enjoy haveing a clean and organized home. I feel at peace, think more clearly, and am more productive when my house is clean.

Over the years I have learned what helps me get going when I don’t feel motivated to clean. What I like about these things is that they are all very simple to put into action, which is a must in my book.

4 Simple Ways to Get Motivated When You Don’t Feel Like Cleaning

1. Listen to Upbeat Music or a Podcast or Audio Book

When I need to get my cleaning game on when I don’t feel motivated putting on something to listen to is always a sure way to get me going. Upbeat, positive music is usually where I start. It’s easy for the whole family to enjoy. I’ve noticed that whatever task it is, I accomplish it more quickly when I have music playing.

Another great option is to listen to an audio book or podcast. Saturdays, while I deep clean the bathroom is usually when I get to my favourite podcasts like The Art of Simple and Sorta Awesome.

3. Create a Reward to Look Forward to

If you go into a cleaning task knowing that a reward is waiting at the end, it’s easier to press on. It might be making a cup of tea to savor for a few minutes after cleaning the bathroom. Or maybe it’s a meal out after spending the whole day focused on a specific cleaning task.

Make the reward fit the effort put forth. You don’t need to have a pizza night just because you cleaned the bathroom just like you don’t a cup of tea may not be motivation enough to press on when you are spending all day going through everyone’s closets.

4. Clean a Little Everyday

Moms this is a  life savor! Believe me. (Those of you who aren’t moms, this is important for you too.)

Dedicate a few minutes each morning and evening to tidying up the house. Durning my years in Mexico, it looked like everyone having an assigned task that took them about 10-15 minutes max in the morning, 5 minutes in the afternoon, and 5 minutes before bed. (So we tidied up three times a day…)

Our goal was to leave the house neat so we could enjoy our living space more. As an added bonus, when Saturday, our normal cleaning day came around, there was a lot less to do.

4. Use Fun Scents

I am all for creating my own cleaning products. I am a huge fan of baking soda, white vinegar, and essential oils.

Sometimes, though, you need want something that smells pretty, is easy to use, and still safe to use at home. Recently I have been using a peppermint scent from Mrs. Myer. Even though it’s still pumpkin season, the peppermint has been making my think of all things winter every time I wash my dishes.

That’s where Grove Collaborative comes in. They are a company dedicated to offering their costumers’ natural products like Mrs. Myers, Dr. Bronner’s, Earth Paste, and Seventh Generation for less. Unless it’s a grocery store, I rarely go shopping at a mortar and brick store.

I am a huge fan of buying most of the things I use in my home online because:

  1. I don’t have to get out in crowds.
  2. It’s easier.
  3. I can generally find better prices.

Products I Purchase from Grove Collaborative:

  • Dr. Bronner’s Catile Soap (I dilute it with water for foaming hand soap. I also use it as bath soap.)
  • Glass Spray Bottle
  • Seventh Generation Chlorine-free Pads (I love my cloth, but sometimes these are nice to have.)
  • Acure Organics Shampoo
  • Preserve Soft Toothbrush
  • Organic Jojoba Oil (I use it as my moisturizer.)

My Favourite Things- Laughter Does the Heart Good

life-is-worth-ns

Laughter does the heart good. It brings joy to your heart and livens your step.

While I don’t believe that life isn’t worth living without laughter, I do think that it makes your day all the brighter.

I’ve been reconnecting with Anne Shirley the past couple weeks thanks to the wonderful world of Librivox. The awesome thing about Librivox is that they are audio books. I love being read to,  plus that means that I get more books in! I listen while I get ready in the morning, while folding laundry, or sometimes in the car.

They are all classics that are in the public domain, so they are free!

DIY Two Ingredient Dry Shampoo

DYI Two Ingredient Dry Shampoo

No poo, it seemed like the way to go.

People reveled in the amazing benefits of washing your hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar. One of my friends even embraced only using water.

I jumped on the bandwagon years ago. At first it was amazing, I loved how my hair felt. It was less greasy and full of body, which is saying a lot for my straight, oil prone hair and scalp.

Sadly I was soon I was left with split ends from the top of my head to the roots. It took my hair over two years to recover from the damage. My friend Kristen over at Smithspirations wrote about her experience which mirrors mine.

I ditched “no-poo” for natural shampoo and slowly saw my hair recover. A couple years later I jumped back on the no-poo movement, this time with a twist.

I tried washing my hair with honey, tea, and eggs… yes you read that right, eggs. Just ask my friend who’s fiance met me for the first time when I admitted to having “scrambled” eggs in my hair. (Side note I still wash my hair with eggs once or twice a month.)

It was also around that time that I discovered the wonderful world of dry shampoo, thanks to the awesome Beth of Red and Honey.

This is the time is where the alternate title for this post comes into play, I could have titled it, “Hi, my name is Katie Mae and I wash my hair with chocolate.”

Do I sound a bit crazy yet? I you already knew I brushed my teeth with dirt so, tried washing my hair with eggs, so should chocolate really surprise you? If you didn’t think I was a crazy, crunchy lady before…. 😉

This simple DIY two ingredient dry shampoo is made with just arrowroot and cocoa powder. You mix them together, dab on your hair, brush, and move on with your day.

I agree that our hair needs a break from daily washing. Thanks to dry shampoo I am able to shower every other day and use the dry shampoo to liven up my hair a bit on the off days.

The base is arrowroot powder, cocoa powder is added to preference. The recipe below has the amount of cocoa powder that matches my light brown hair. Use more or less for your preference.

DIY Two Ingredient Dry Shampoo

1/2 cup arrowroot powder
1/4 cup cocoa powder (more or less to fit your hair color)

Add both to a small jar. Screw on the lid and shake well. Allow the shampoo to settle before opening.

Methods of application:

  • Pinch with your fingers and sprinkle on. Brush your hair to spread the dry shampoo evenly.
  • Makeup Brush- Dip the brush in a jar, tap gently to remove access. Brush across your hair starting at the roots, covering any oily spot. Brush with your hair with your regular hair brush spread the shampoo evenly.

Easy DIY Toothpowder

What would you say if I told you I gave up toothpaste 6 years ago?

You might look at me like I was a crazy person and then try to sneak a peek to see if there were any teeth in my mouth. Or you might back away to avoid the expected bad breath.

Perhaps I should clarify a bit. I didn’t give up brushing my teeth, I just gave up conventional toothpaste.

Most of the ingredients in conventional pastes make me shudder. Even “natural” ones tend to have

Even “natural” ones tend to have glycerin which coats your teeth, preventing them from being able to heal themselves through remineralization.  (Wellness Mama has an excellent article about remineralization.)

I am a DIYer, I was making my own things long before I knew it was the cool thing to do. It all started with my “tooth soap“, and then evolved into making deodorant, lotion, and cleaners.

I always get the itch to create new things so when I saw BHS’s toothpaste recipe featuring bentonite clay a few years ago I knew it was time to experiment again, that is how this easy DIY toothpowder was born.
